I FEEL ANXIOUS
Anxiety has a way of convincing us that danger is always just around the corner.
Not necessarily a visible danger. Something subtler. A conversation that has not happened yet.
A mistake we have not made. A future that has not arrived.
The mind begins moving ahead of us, searching endlessly for what could go wrong.
And because it is searching, it finds something. It always does.
A possibility. A risk. A scenario. Then another. And another.
Soon we find ourselves living in dozens of imagined futures while barely inhabiting the present
moment at all. This can be exhausting. Yet anxiety is rarely the enemy it appears to be.
At its core, anxiety is often an attempt to protect us. A vigilant guardian standing watch at the gates.
The problem is not that the guardian exists. The problem is that sometimes it forgets how to rest.
Sometimes it continues sounding alarms long after the danger has passed.
Sometimes it begins treating uncertainty itself as a threat.
And life contains a great deal of uncertainty. No amount of preparation can eliminate it.
No amount of thinking can control every outcome. No amount of vigilance can guarantee perfect safety.
Yet many of us spend years trying.
We become responsible for everything. We carry every possibility.
We attempt to predict every storm before it appears on the horizon. And somewhere along the way,
we forget to live.
Perhaps anxiety is not asking us to think harder. Perhaps it is asking us to listen more carefully.
What is it trying to protect? What part of us feels unsafe? What wound has taught us that vigilance
is the price of survival?
Beneath anxiety there is often a story. A memory. A belief.
A pattern that was once useful and necessary.
Understanding that pattern does not instantly silence anxiety. But it can begin transforming our
relationship with it. Because the goal is not always to defeat anxiety.
Sometimes the goal is to understand the message hidden beneath the alarm.
To recognize the difference between a real threat and an old survival strategy.
And to remember that not every uncertainty is a danger. Some uncertainties are simply
the doorway through which life enters.
The future has always been unknown. Yet somehow, you have arrived here.
And perhaps that says more about your ability to navigate uncertainty than anxiety would have you believe.
