I DON’T UNDERSTAND WHY I REACT THIS WAY
Few things are more confusing than watching yourself react in a way that makes no sense to you.
You tell yourself not to worry. Yet the anxiety arrives. You promise yourself not to get angry.
Yet the anger appears before you can stop it. You know a situation is safe. Yet your body responds
as though it is not.
And afterward, a question often remains: “Why did I react like that?”
The mind prefers simple explanations: weakness, lack of control, overthinking.
Yet human beings are rarely that simple. Much of what drives our reactions exists beneath
conscious awareness. Long before we learned how to explain ourselves, we learned how to survive.
We learned what was safe. What was dangerous. What brought connection. What brought rejection.
What protected us from pain.
These lessons settled into the deeper layers of the mind and body. Many of them were useful.
Many of them helped us navigate difficult experiences. The problem is that the subconscious
does not always recognize when circumstances have changed.
A reaction that once served a purpose may continue long after the original situation has disappeared.
A child who learned to stay silent may struggle to speak. A person who learned to expect
disappointment may struggle to trust. Someone who spent years protecting themselves may find it
difficult to relax even when no danger is present.
From the outside, these reactions can appear irrational. From the inside, they often make
perfect sense once their origins are understood. The reaction itself is rarely the beginning of the story.
It is usually the final chapter of a much older one. This is why insight alone does not always create change.
You may know something logically while another part of you continues responding according to a
different set of rules. A deeper set of rules. Rules written through experience rather than reason.
Perhaps the question is not:
“Why can’t I control this reaction?”
Perhaps the question is:
“What is this reaction trying to protect?”
Every reaction carries information. Every emotional response points toward something.
A belief. A memory. A fear. An expectation. A pattern that once served a purpose.
Understanding that purpose does not mean judging it. It means becoming curious about it.
Because what appears irrational from the surface often reveals a deeper logic when viewed from within.
And sometimes the path toward change begins not with fighting the reaction, but with finally
understanding the story it has been trying to tell all along.
